Susie Jackson James, 90, a lifetime Alaskan, died November 3 in Sitka. She was horn in Hoonah. a member of the Chookan-Nadi clan. In 1918 she moved to Sitka and married James Bailey Howard, chief of the Coho House, while a young girl in Hoonah, she worked with a nurse who showed her how to deliver babies. At age 16 she was delivering babies on her own, and eventually she delivered more than 1,000, Members of the family told the Sitka Sentinel. Chief Howard died in 1953. and her second husband. Scotty James, died in 1961. [Mar1981]
