End of the Trail

Notices in this section are limited to names of those who have achieved pioneer status through many years in the North, or who are otherwise of unquestioned importance in the daily scene.

Nancy Sanderson Meals, 85, an important figure in the history of Valdez, died November 12 at Amarillo, Texas, where she had lived since 1974. She arrived in Valdez in 1926 and taught high school. In 1932 she became Valdez postmistress, a job she held until 1962. After the Valdez town site was devastated in the-1964 earthquake, she and her husband Owen, who died in 1974, gave the city a gift of land for a new town site several miles to the west. [Feb1981]
