Irvin B. Howser, 71, who came to Haines in 1947 as a teacher and who through the years operated a lunch counter, a bakery, a restaurant, and a store there, died in Seattle October 26. He was the first fire chief in Haines and was active with the volunteer fire department during most of his years 1 n Haines. [Mar1981]
